Champaign, Ill. – The pavement is already warming under bright sunshine, and the sticky air hints at what is coming next. By this afternoon, central Illinois will trade quiet skies for dangerous heat and the possibility of thunderstorms that could quickly interrupt outdoor plans.
Heat and humidity are building across east-central Illinois, with afternoon heat index values reaching as high as 103 degrees before scattered thunderstorms develop later today. According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, hot and humid conditions will continue through the afternoon, with isolated strong storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, while wildfire smoke begins moving into the region later, leading to reduced air quality through Sunday.
Temperatures are expected to climb to around 91 degrees, but the humidity will make it feel significantly hotter. A 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 4 p.m., with wind gusts reaching 20 mph outside of storms. While widespread severe weather is not expected, any stronger storm could produce locally damaging winds and brief heavy rainfall.
Drivers along Interstate 57, Interstate 74, Interstate 72 and U.S. Route 45 should remain alert during the afternoon and evening. A passing thunderstorm could quickly reduce visibility on wet pavement. If you’re traveling, give yourself extra time and monitor changing conditions before heading out.
Stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon. Check on older adults, children and pets, and never leave anyone inside a parked vehicle.
Sunday brings patchy wildfire smoke early before skies become mostly sunny with a high near 85 degrees. Monday warms back to 88 degrees before another round of showers and thunderstorms arrives Monday night. Tuesday looks sunny with highs near 89 degrees, although additional storm chances may develop elsewhere across Illinois later in the week.
The 6-to-10-day outlook favors above-normal temperatures across much of the Midwest, signaling that summer heat is likely to remain the dominant weather story into late next week.
