Central Illinois – Hot and humid conditions will continue to grip Central Illinois through early next week, with dangerously high heat indices reaching 100–110 degrees, particularly near and south of I-72 today and lasting through Sunday-Tuesday. The intense heat will be paired with thunderstorm chances, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service, the combination of extreme heat and humidity will make outdoor activities potentially hazardous, with the worst conditions expected in areas south of I-72 today. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the weekend, with a greater likelihood of strong storms this afternoon and Sunday. While these storms may offer some relief from the heat, they will also bring the risk of heavy rain and strong winds.

Residents in cities such as Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign should be particularly vigilant as temperatures climb into the low 90s, and the heat indices could push well over 100 degrees in some areas. The National Weather Service is advising that people stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities, and seek air-conditioned spaces during the hottest parts of the day. Drivers should also be cautious, as stormy conditions could reduce visibility and create wet roads.

A cold front is expected to bring cooler temperatures and additional storm chances toward the end of next week. Until then, be prepared for continued heat and potential storms throughout the region.
