Springfield, IL – Central and southern Illinois residents should prepare for a sharp temperature plunge by early next week following rounds of showers and potential severe storms Friday and Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, an active frontal boundary will trigger periods of showers and thunderstorms through Saturday. Friday afternoon and evening may bring isolated severe weather, with hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph primarily in southeastern parts of the state. Localized flooding is also a concern due to repeated rainfall.

Temperatures will remain mild through Friday, ranging from the upper 50s to upper 60s. However, a significant drop is expected as colder air moves in behind the front. Daytime highs by Sunday will struggle to reach the 40s, with overnight lows plunging into the low 30s. By Monday morning, much of the region could see temperatures in the mid-20s.

Residents are advised to monitor weather updates closely and secure outdoor items ahead of strong winds. Drivers should watch for water-covered roads and prepare for colder travel conditions starting late weekend. Power outages from Friday’s storms may complicate heating needs during the cold snap.
