Illinois – Low clouds and damp air hang over central Illinois this morning, but the atmosphere is quietly building toward a volatile shift by afternoon. Conditions can change quickly, especially south of I-74.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop through the late-day hours, with the greatest risk from Springfield to Champaign. Large hail and damaging winds are the primary threats, though a brief tornado cannot be ruled out .

Across Champaign, Decatur, and Bloomington, skies will gradually clear before storms redevelop nearby. If storms track over the area, expect sudden downpours, reduced visibility, and wind gusts strong enough to impact travel on I-72 and I-57. Plan extra time this afternoon and evening.

Once the front passes, conditions flip fast. Temperatures drop sharply into the mid-20s by early Saturday morning. That rapid cooldown raises concerns for a hard freeze, especially for early spring vegetation and gardens. Cover sensitive plants before sunset.

Saturday turns bright and calmer, with highs near 50°F. By Sunday, a steady warm-up pushes temperatures into the low 60s under mostly cloudy skies.

The biggest swing arrives Monday. Highs surge into the mid-70s across central Illinois, bringing a burst of spring warmth. That warmth fuels another round of unsettled weather, with thunderstorms possible Monday night into Tuesday.

Meteorologists are tracking a more active pattern heading into midweek, with additional rain and storm chances developing.

Five Day Outlook for Champaign, Illinois:
Saturday: Sunny, high near 50°F
Sunday: Mostly cloudy, high near 61°F
Monday: Partly sunny, high near 76°F
Tuesday: Chance of storms, high near 81°F
Wednesday: Chance of rain, high near 70°F
