Lincoln, Illinois – Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across parts of central Illinois this afternoon, with damaging winds and a limited tornado threat possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Central Illinois reports that the highest risk for severe storms is east of Interstate 55, where conditions are more favorable for storm development. The region is under a Level 2 risk, indicating scattered severe storms are possible.

Forecasters say storms are expected to form between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, with activity increasing during the afternoon hours before shifting east into Indiana by early evening.

The primary threat is damaging wind gusts, with some storms capable of producing strong to locally damaging winds. A few tornadoes are possible, though the tornado risk is considered secondary to the wind threat. Small hail may also occur with stronger storms.

The National Weather Service advises residents to stay weather-aware throughout the afternoon and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if storms approach. Officials recommend having multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially for those with outdoor plans.

Storms are expected to move east into Indiana around 6 p.m., bringing an end to the severe threat across central Illinois.

For commuters, students, and workers, storms may impact late afternoon travel and outdoor activities.

Additional updates and warnings will be issued by the National Weather Service as storms develop.
