Lincoln, Illinois – Periods of light snow are expected Saturday across central and northern Illinois, with the greatest chance for measurable accumulation north of a Quincy-to-Danville line.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service Central Illinois office, rain is expected to transition to snow by Saturday morning as colder air moves into the region. Forecasters say the probability of at least one inch of snow is highest across northern portions of the forecast area, while areas farther south are less likely to see significant accumulation.
The National Weather Service noted that snow showers may be wind-whipped at times, which could lead to slippery travel conditions and sharply reduced visibility over short distances. While snowfall amounts are not expected to be heavy, brief bursts of snow could quickly affect road conditions.
Forecast guidance shows temperatures falling through the day Saturday, with much colder air returning Saturday night into Sunday. These colder temperatures may allow light snow to accumulate more efficiently, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
The agency emphasized that impacts will likely be uneven, with some locations seeing little accumulation while others pick up around an inch of snow. Drivers may encounter rapidly changing conditions, particularly during periods of heavier snow showers.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared for winter travel conditions if heading out Saturday. Slowing down, increasing following distance, and allowing extra travel time can help reduce the risk of crashes.
Looking ahead, colder-than-normal temperatures are expected to persist into Sunday following the passage of the system.
For commuters, students, and weekend travelers across central and northern Illinois, even light snowfall could create localized travel delays on Saturday.
