Central Illinois – Central Illinois residents should prepare for severe thunderstorms today, with heavy rain and damaging winds forecasted throughout the day. According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, there is a significant threat of thunderstorms bringing torrential rainfall and wind gusts nearing 60 mph through Thursday.
The probability of precipitation is high, especially in areas like Decatur, Champaign, and Springfield, with chances ranging from 50% to 65% throughout the day. Severe storm threats include isolated to scattered thunderstorms capable of causing flash flooding and power outages.
Forecasters warn that these severe conditions may disrupt Fourth of July plans. According to the National Weather Service, lightning and strong winds pose a serious risk to outdoor activities, emphasizing the importance of staying weather-aware.
Temperatures will range from the mid-80s to low-90s, with a slow-moving front expected to bring occasional showers and storms until Friday morning. The highest risk of severe weather is predicted from noon to 8 p.m. today, with another wave of storms likely tomorrow.
