Springfield, Ill. – Hot and humid conditions will grip Illinois through Tuesday, with heat indices climbing as high as 105 before scattered thunderstorms bring some relief. Residents across the state are urged to limit outdoor activity, especially during peak afternoon hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, today will bring the highest heat levels, with cities such as Peoria, Springfield, and Decatur experiencing dangerous heat indices above 102. The agency warns that thunderstorms are likely to move in late tonight and continue into early Tuesday, producing gusty winds and heavy rainfall.
Bloomington, Champaign, and Danville face the best chance of storms between midnight and Tuesday morning, where rain rates could briefly flood low-lying streets. Motorists are advised to watch for ponding on roads during the Tuesday morning commute. Utility outages may occur if stronger storms down trees and power lines.
Officials recommend staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and taking frequent breaks if working outdoors. Shifting activities to the morning or evening hours will help reduce exposure to extreme heat.
Conditions are expected to ease by midweek, with highs returning to the 80s and drier air moving in by Wednesday.
