Springfield, Ill. – Central Illinois will hold onto summer heat for one more day before a stormy pattern takes over Friday and lingers into early next week. Highs in the low 90s are expected Thursday, with sunshine dominating most of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered thunderstorms begin pushing into western Illinois by Friday afternoon, with Springfield, Peoria, and Galesburg seeing the first chances for rain. By Saturday and Sunday, showers and storms become more widespread, with Bloomington, Champaign, and Decatur likely to be affected.

Roads could see ponding during heavier downpours, especially along I-55 and I-72 where commuter traffic remains steady. Outdoor plans, including high school football games and fall festivals, could face interruptions Friday evening through Sunday. Residents are encouraged to keep phones charged for weather alerts and seek shelter quickly if lightning approaches.

Rain chances climb above 60% Monday in many locations, including Danville and Effingham, with cooler highs in the 80s making a return. Additional advisories are possible as the unsettled pattern continues into midweek.
