Springfield, IL – Central Illinois residents are in for a crisp taste of fall this week, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning of overnight temperatures dipping into the 30s and 40s tonight and Thursday night. A touch of frost is possible in colder, rural areas, particularly in east central Illinois.

According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, daytime highs will stay mild, hovering between 68°F and 72°F through Thursday under mostly sunny skies. The chill sets in after sunset, with tonight’s lows expected to fall as low as 38°F in some locations.

Friday marks the start of a gradual warm-up, with temperatures climbing back into the low 70s by day and remaining cool but frost-free overnight. The warming trend continues into the weekend, with highs reaching the upper 70s Saturday and Sunday.

By early next week, forecasters expect highs in the lower 80s — signaling a brief return to late-summer warmth before cooler fall air returns.

Residents are encouraged to protect sensitive plants and outdoor pets during the next two nights of potential frost.
