Springfield, IL – After a windy start to the week, Central Illinois is set for calmer but much cooler nights, with frost possible Wednesday and Thursday mornings, according to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois.

Winds that reached gusts near 40 mph Tuesday evening are expected to decrease overnight but remain breezy into Wednesday, with gusts up to 30 mph possible. As winds die down Wednesday night, temperatures will drop into the mid-30s, bringing a risk of patchy frost across much of the region.

The cold stretch continues into Thursday night, with lows again dipping between 31°F and 36°F, particularly in rural areas and low-lying spots. High temperatures through midweek are expected to stay slightly below normal, ranging from the upper 50s to low 60s.

According to the Weather Service, another round of frost may form Friday morning, followed by a return of rain chances Friday night into Saturday as a new system approaches.

Residents are urged to protect sensitive plants and outdoor equipment during overnight hours, as frost could develop before sunrise both Thursday and Friday.

The next chance for measurable rain will arrive Friday night, with showers potentially lingering into the weekend.
