Champaign, Ill. – Triple-digit heat and severe storms will make for a volatile Friday across Central Illinois, especially along and north of I-72.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, dangerously high heat index values between 105 to 110°F will peak Friday, July 25, as afternoon highs soar to near 93°F. Thunderstorms are expected to fire up after 1 p.m., bringing a threat of damaging wind gusts, lightning, and heavy rain. Localized flooding is also possible.
Strong storms may intensify Friday evening, especially from I-72 northward, where winds could exceed 60 mph, posing a risk to travelers, utility lines, and outdoor activities. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, hydrate frequently, and secure outdoor items ahead of incoming storms.
Storms will linger through Friday night, then shift into a 50% chance of storms Saturday, which will also remain hot, with highs near 91°F. Sunday turns sunnier and hotter again with a high of 93°F, followed by more storm chances Monday night into Tuesday.
