Springfield, Illinois – Strong winds building late Monday morning could make travel hazardous within hours, especially on east-west highways where gusts may push vehicles and reduce visibility.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, south winds will increase to 35 to 45 mph between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, with the strongest gusts expected across eastern Illinois, including Champaign, Decatur, and Danville. These winds may create difficult driving conditions on major routes such as I-55, I-72, and I-74, particularly for trucks, buses, and other high-profile vehicles.
Blowing dust is also a concern in areas that miss early-day rainfall. Recently tilled fields across central and eastern Illinois could send dust into the air, dropping visibility suddenly on rural roads and open stretches of highway. Brief near-zero visibility is possible in localized areas during peak wind periods.
Cities including Springfield, Bloomington, Peoria, and Effingham will experience sustained winds above 30 mph, with higher gusts developing through the afternoon. Loose outdoor objects may be blown around, and isolated tree damage is possible.
Drivers should keep both hands on the wheel and be prepared for sudden crosswinds. If visibility drops in dust, slow down and pull off the roadway as far as possible.
Winds will gradually ease after sunset Monday, but additional alerts may be issued if gusts trend higher during the afternoon.
