Springfield, Illinois – A sharp swing from summer-like heat to overnight storms could disrupt travel and power across central Illinois Thursday night, with temperatures nearing 90°F before severe weather moves in after sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, highs will climb into the mid to upper 80s Thursday, especially south of I-70, creating instability for thunderstorms developing late afternoon and intensifying into the evening. Storms are expected to become more widespread Thursday night, with the strongest activity capable of producing damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and large hail.

Cities including Springfield, Champaign, Decatur, Bloomington, and Effingham will see the greatest impact during the evening and overnight hours. Initial storms may be scattered, but forecasters warn they could organize into a stronger line moving east, increasing the risk for widespread wind damage and isolated power outages.

Rain chances remain elevated into early Friday morning, particularly south of I-70, where repeated downpours could lead to localized flooding on rural roads and low-lying areas.

By Friday, temperatures will drop sharply into the upper 40s to low 50s for highs, marking a 30-degree cooldown in less than 24 hours. Overnight lows could fall into the upper 20s by Friday night.

Residents should secure outdoor items, monitor alerts, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions Thursday evening. Additional advisories may be issued as storms develop.
