Springfield, IL – Temperatures are surging into the upper 70s and low 80s across central Illinois today, pushing near-record warmth that could impact outdoor plans and increase fire risk through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, highs will reach between 75 and 81 degrees Friday, with some locations south of Interstate 72 approaching record levels. Warm, dry air continues Saturday with highs climbing as high as 82 degrees under mostly sunny skies.
Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, and Bloomington will see steady warmth through the weekend, with little relief overnight as mild conditions persist. Dry vegetation combined with warm temperatures may elevate the risk for grass fires, especially in rural areas.
By Sunday evening, a cold front moves through, triggering thunderstorms primarily along and south of Interstate 70. While not all areas will see severe weather, stronger storms could produce gusty winds and brief heavy rain, potentially slowing travel on routes like I-55 and I-57.
Cooler air returns by Monday, with highs dropping into the low to mid-50s. Additional updates are expected if storm strength increases late Sunday.
