Springfield, Illinois – Drivers across central Illinois could encounter strong crosswinds overnight into Friday, as a fast-moving clipper system pushes through the region and produces wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph capable of making travel difficult on exposed highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, clouds will increase through Thursday with afternoon temperatures reaching around 50 degrees. A developing low pressure system over the Upper Midwest will strengthen winds late Thursday evening, bringing southwest gusts up to 50 mph overnight across cities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Decatur, and Champaign.

The strongest gusts may occur along major travel routes including Interstate 55, Interstate 72, and the I-74 corridor, where crosswinds could impact high-profile vehicles such as trucks and vans.

By Friday morning, winds will gradually shift to the northwest, still producing gusts between 35 and 50 mph before slowly easing through the afternoon.

While precipitation remains limited through Friday, forecasters say rain chances increase late Saturday night into Sunday, when a stronger system moves through the Midwest bringing widespread showers and breezy conditions.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor objects such as trash bins and patio furniture before winds increase overnight. The Wind Advisory remains in effect through Friday, and additional updates may follow if wind speeds increase.
