Peoria, IL – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for much of central Illinois tonight, as a mix of snow and freezing rain is expected to develop late Saturday evening and continue through early Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the advisory covers areas along and north of a Rushville–Decatur–Mattoon line, including Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, Decatur, and Danville. The alert is in effect from 9 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.
Forecasters expect 1 to 2 inches of snow north of the I-74 corridor, with the main concern being a thin glaze of ice forming as freezing rain mixes with snow. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads could quickly become slick and hazardous.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution if heading out overnight or early Sunday. Pedestrians should also take care on sidewalks and driveways, where icy patches could cause slips and falls.
