Springfield, Ill. – Summerlike heat will linger across central Illinois this week, with daily highs reaching the low 90s through Thursday before a chance of storms arrives to close the workweek. The stretch of hot, dry weather is expected to keep conditions parched across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, afternoon temperatures will top out between 89 and 92 degrees from Tuesday through Thursday, with overnight lows in the 60s. Rain chances remain minimal until Friday, when a weak low-pressure system could trigger scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Cities including Peoria, Bloomington, and Decatur can expect hazy sunshine and dry air to dominate midweek. Farmers and gardeners will need to keep irrigation going, as soil moisture levels will continue to drop. Outdoor workers and school athletes should stay hydrated and limit exposure during peak afternoon hours, when heat indices may feel closer to the mid-90s.

Travel impacts are expected to remain low through Thursday, but lightning and downpours could briefly slow drivers Friday afternoon and evening. Any stronger storms may also bring gusty winds, though widespread severe weather is not anticipated.

Temperatures are expected to ease slightly into the upper 80s after the front passes, with additional storm chances possible heading into the weekend.
