Springfield, Illinois – A rapid warm-up will push temperatures into the 80s by Thursday afternoon, followed by thunderstorms Thursday night that could disrupt travel and bring isolated severe conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, highs will climb from the upper 50s Tuesday into the 70s Wednesday before peaking between 82°F and 87°F Thursday across central Illinois. A sharp cold front will move through Thursday night, triggering widespread showers and thunderstorms, some of which may become strong to severe.

Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, and Effingham are expected to see storms develop after 7 p.m., with the greatest impacts continuing overnight. Drivers along I-55, I-57, and I-70 should prepare for sudden downpours, gusty winds, and reduced visibility. Localized ponding on roads may develop quickly where heavier rain falls.

The warm conditions ahead of the front may briefly limit storm development earlier in the day, but conditions shift quickly after sunset. Behind the front, temperatures will drop sharply into the upper 40s and low 50s by Friday, ending the brief stretch of summer-like warmth.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, monitor alerts Thursday evening, and plan for changing conditions overnight. Additional watches or warnings may be issued as the cold front approaches.
