Springfield, Ill. — Scattered snow showers and rapidly falling temperatures could create slick travel conditions across central Illinois during the Thursday evening commute, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say snow showers are expected to develop Thursday afternoon and continue into the evening, with the greatest impacts likely between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. While snowfall accumulations are expected to remain light, even brief bursts of snow could reduce visibility and cause roads to become slippery as temperatures drop below freezing.
The National Weather Service office in Lincoln said the primary concern is not snow totals, but how quickly temperatures fall as snow showers move through. Gusty winds may also accompany the snow, further reducing visibility at times.
Cities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Decatur and surrounding communities could see patchy slick spots develop on untreated roads, bridges and overpasses. Officials urge drivers to use caution, slow down and allow extra travel time during the evening commute.
“Even minor snow showers can create hazardous conditions when temperatures fall quickly,” the weather service said, noting that conditions may change rapidly over short distances.
Temperatures are expected to continue falling Thursday night, allowing any moisture on roadways to refreeze. Motorists traveling later in the evening or overnight hours should remain alert for icy patches, especially in rural areas and on less-traveled roads.
The snow showers are expected to taper off later Thursday night as colder, drier air moves into the region. Friday is forecast to be colder but largely dry, with improved travel conditions expected during the day.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and road conditions before heading out Thursday evening. The Illinois Department of Transportation recommends checking traffic and travel updates and being prepared for winter driving conditions despite limited snowfall.
