Champaign, IL – Two Champaign firefighters and an emergency medical technician were hospitalized after allegedly being stabbed while responding to a call Thursday night.

According to the Champaign Police Department, officers were dispatched around 9:40 p.m. near Neil Street and Buena Vista Drive after a man reported experiencing a mental health crisis. Champaign Fire Department crews and Arrow Ambulance personnel arrived to transport the individual, but just after 9:50 p.m., they called for immediate assistance, citing an active stabbing at the scene.

Police said they arrived to find two firefighters and a paramedic suffering from serious stab wounds. A medical unit already on scene was restraining the man, identified as 23-year-old Trevor Lewis of Champaign. Additional responders provided aid, and all three injured first responders were transported to area hospitals. Authorities reported that the firefighters remain hospitalized in serious but stable condition, while the EMT has since been treated and released.

Lewis also sustained a hand laceration and was hospitalized before being arrested on initial charges of three counts of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated battery, and one count of resisting arrest, according to police.

Investigators said the case remains active, with officers canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage. Police are asking residents or businesses in the area with exterior cameras to review their systems and share any potential evidence.
