Springfield, IL – A Freeze Warning will remain in effect across central Illinois, including Springfield and the I-72 corridor, from midnight until 9 a.m. Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to fall as low as 25°F, posing a serious risk to sensitive plants and unprotected outdoor plumbing.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, residents should take immediate precautions Monday night to protect tender vegetation. Covering plants or moving them indoors is strongly advised. The coldest period will occur just before dawn Tuesday, with widespread frost expected even in urban zones.

Communities across Champaign, Decatur, Lincoln, and Danville are included in the warning zone. Outdoor water systems, such as sprinkler lines, could also be vulnerable to freezing damage if not drained or insulated.

Though Monday will remain sunny with highs near 45°F and gusty northwest winds, conditions will change drastically after sunset. Overnight lows will plummet into the mid-20s across much of central and southeast Illinois.

The cold snap is expected to be brief. By Tuesday afternoon, sunshine will return and temperatures will rebound to around 49°F. However, patchy frost may still occur Tuesday night as lows dip near freezing once more.

Looking ahead, rain chances increase midweek, with showers likely on Wednesday and a continued threat into Thursday. Highs will reach the upper 50s by Thursday and low 70s by Sunday, signaling a return to typical spring warmth.

Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts and plan accordingly to avoid damage from the freeze.
