Lexington, IL – Three EF-1 tornadoes touched down in McLean and Ford counties on Thursday, causing damage across the region.
According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, the tornadoes, each with peak wind speeds of around 110 mph, were confirmed near Lexington and between Anchor and Gibson City. The storms also brought enhanced wind damage, with speeds of 60-90 mph reported across northeast McLean, southwest Livingston, and southern Ford counties.
The National Weather Service worked with local emergency managers to assess the damage. They noted that distinguishing tornado tracks amidst the widespread wind damage was challenging. However, the team identified three distinct tornado paths, attributing substantial damage to these EF-1 twisters.
The survey team will continue their analysis over the weekend and collaborate with colleagues at the National Weather Service in Chicago to finalize the survey results. Residents are advised to stay informed about ongoing weather conditions and any further updates from authorities.
In addition to tornado damage, Central Illinois is bracing for a stretch of hot and humid weather. Highs are expected to rise into the 90s next week, with heat index values potentially reaching 100 degrees on Sunday and Monday. The National Weather Service advises residents to take precautions during this period of extreme heat.
