Springfield, Ill. – Scattered thunderstorms will sweep across central and southeast Illinois tonight, bringing bursts of heavy rain and gusty winds before a cooler air mass arrives midweek. The storms are expected to move in late this evening and could cause brief flooding in low-lying areas and slowdowns on interstates including I-55 and I-72.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the strongest storms will develop late tonight and linger into early Tuesday, producing localized downpours and wind gusts strong enough to down small branches. Lows tonight will stay muggy in the low 70s, but a cold front arriving Tuesday will bring relief from the humidity by Wednesday.

On Tuesday, scattered morning storms will taper off, giving way to drier conditions. Afternoon highs will still climb into the upper 80s and low 90s, but the cooler and less humid air will arrive by Tuesday night. Wednesday will feel noticeably different with highs in the low to mid-80s and lower dew points, making it more comfortable across central Illinois.

Residents are advised to limit travel during heavy downpours and remain alert for water ponding on roads tonight. More stable conditions are expected by midweek, with partly cloudy skies and seasonable temperatures carrying through the end of the week.
