Springfield, Illinois – Severe storms tore through central Illinois on Wednesday, June 18, spawning 11 confirmed tornadoes across eight counties and leaving a trail of damage from Morgan to McLean County.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the strongest tornado touched down near Literberry in Morgan County as an EF-2, packing winds up to 125 mph and carving a 6.7-mile path. EF-1 tornadoes were also confirmed in Lynnville, NW Jacksonville, and Pleasant Plains, with wind speeds topping 110 mph near Petersburg.
While no fatalities were reported, tree damage, power outages, and structural impacts were widespread, especially in areas like Ashland, South Jacksonville, and Mason City. Bellflower and Hopedale also experienced brief touchdowns classified as EF-U, meaning they had indeterminate intensity but still caused concern among residents.
Emergency managers are urging residents to review emergency shelter plans and remain alert for continued severe weather risk through the weekend. Clean-up crews are already working across impacted counties, but downed lines and debris continue to pose hazards.
More updates are expected if additional storm surveys reveal further tornado paths or upgraded ratings.
