Springfield, Ill. – Scattered strong storms could spark urban flooding and wind damage across central and southeast Illinois late Monday as a cold front moves through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms are expected between 4 and 10 p.m., with the greatest threats including wind gusts up to 70 mph and localized flooding in low-lying or urban areas. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the region, including Champaign, Decatur, and Mattoon, under a Level 1 Marginal Risk for severe weather.

Cities such as Springfield, Bloomington, and Effingham should prepare for brief downpours and the potential for loose debris or minor power outages due to strong winds. Heat indices near the mid-90s earlier in the day will drop as drier, cooler air filters in by Tuesday. Tuesday and Wednesday bring partly cloudy skies, highs in the mid-80s, and lower humidity levels.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways during tonight’s storms and secure outdoor items ahead of gusty conditions. Residents should stay weather-aware and have alerts enabled on phones or NOAA radios.

Scattered rain ends tonight, but warnings may extend if storms linger past 10 p.m.
