Springfield, IL – Scattered showers and storms are tracking east across central Illinois this evening, bringing the threat of strong, potentially damaging winds to cities including Decatur, Champaign, and Springfield.
According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, the strongest storm activity is expected between 8:30 p.m. and midnight. Wind gusts ranging from 40 to 60 mph could cause downed tree limbs and isolated power outages across the region.
The arrival window for the storms varies by location, with areas west of Springfield seeing activity between 8–9 p.m., Springfield and Decatur around 9–10 p.m., and Champaign, Mattoon, and Effingham between 10–11 p.m. Some southern areas may not see storm passage until just before midnight.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for potential weather alerts. Strong wind gusts may disrupt travel, especially for high-profile vehicles, and sporadic power disruptions are possible.
While storms are forecast to weaken as they move east, they may still retain the ability to produce locally damaging winds. The National Weather Service encourages residents to have a reliable method of receiving severe weather alerts through midnight.
