Springfield, Ill. – Drivers and outdoor workers across central Illinois should prepare for extreme heat and possible severe storms Friday afternoon, as conditions turn volatile heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heat index values could soar between 97 and 105 degrees Friday, followed by a 50% chance of scattered thunderstorms developing by the evening. Some storms may bring damaging wind gusts and brief downpours, particularly along the I-55 and I-72 corridors.

The active pattern continues into Saturday, with storm chances peaking at 60% by late afternoon. While Sunday brings some relief as cooler air filters in from the west, storm activity may linger in the eastern half of the state through early evening.

Cities including Bloomington, Champaign, Decatur, and Peoria should brace for delays, downed branches, and possible power outages during evening commutes. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours and charge devices in case of outages.

This heat marks one of the highest indexes so far this summer and could strain power grids. Those without air conditioning should seek cooling centers and stay hydrated.

Storm chances begin to taper Sunday, but isolated activity may return Monday. More advisories are possible if Friday’s storms intensify.
