Springfield, IL – Residents across central and southeast Illinois should prepare for a wet Saturday afternoon and evening, as widespread rainfall moves through the region, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

Forecasters expect periods of moderate to heavy rain beginning this afternoon and continuing into early Sunday morning. Rainfall totals are projected to reach 1–2 inches, especially along a corridor from Jacksonville and Springfield east through Effingham, Champaign, and Paris.

Light rain began early Saturday in some areas, but the heaviest rainfall is expected late this afternoon through midnight, potentially causing ponding on roads and reduced visibility for drivers.

Rain will taper off by Sunday morning, followed by cooler and drier conditions to start the new week.

Residents are urged to allow extra travel time and stay alert for slick roads during the heaviest downpours.
