Springfield, IL – Drivers across central and eastern Illinois could face slick and snow-covered roads through early Tuesday, as a widespread winter system brings up to 5 inches of snow to the region. The heaviest snowfall is expected Monday evening, directly impacting rush hour and overnight travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Affected areas include major cities along and north of I-72—such as Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, and Decatur—where snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches are forecast. Hazardous travel is likely along interstates including I-55, I-74, and I-72.

Snow is expected to gradually taper off overnight, but untreated roadways could remain slippery into the Tuesday morning commute. IDOT advises motorists to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions at www.gettingaroundillinois.com.

Local school districts and businesses may issue closures or delays depending on conditions Tuesday morning. Residents should prepare for limited visibility, allow extra time for snow removal, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready.

Warnings remain in effect through 6 a.m. Tuesday, and additional advisories may be issued if snowfall rates increase or road conditions worsen.
