Springfield, Illinois – Scattered snow showers are expected across central Illinois this afternoon and evening, with reduced visibility and slick travel conditions likely in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.
In a Friday update, forecasters said snow showers may become moderate to locally heavy at times, accompanied by west winds gusting up to 30 mph. While snowfall accumulations are expected to remain under 1 inch, blowing snow and falling snow could briefly reduce visibility to less than one mile, especially during heavier bursts.
The National Weather Service warned that conditions may change quickly, with slippery roads and sudden visibility drops posing risks for drivers. Impacts are expected to be most noticeable during the late afternoon and early evening commute.
Temperatures across central Illinois are forecast to remain in the upper 30s to low 40s today before turning sharply colder tonight. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the teens and lower 20s, with much colder air settling into the region for the weekend and early next week.
Officials urged motorists to use caution, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions. While impacts are expected to be short-lived, even brief snow showers could create hazardous driving conditions.
Much colder temperatures are expected to persist into early next week, with additional minor snow chances possible during the colder period.
