Springfield, IL – Drivers across central Illinois are facing hazardous travel conditions this morning as snowfall continues to intensify, leaving roads snow-covered and visibility sharply reduced in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, snow is ongoing across the region and is expected to intensify through the morning hours. Officials report snow-covered and slippery roads, with visibility reduced to around one-half mile at times. In localized bursts of heavier snow, visibility may drop to as low as one-quarter mile.

Radar imagery from early Saturday morning shows bands of moderate to heavy snow stretching across much of central Illinois, impacting travel along major corridors including Interstate 55, Interstate 72, and U.S. Route 51. Communities experiencing hazardous conditions include Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Decatur, Lincoln, Jacksonville, and Champaign.

The National Weather Service warns that road conditions can deteriorate quickly during heavier snow bursts, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways. Morning commuters may experience sudden reductions in visibility and traction, increasing the risk of accidents.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. If travel is not essential, officials recommend delaying trips until conditions improve later today.

Motorists can check the latest road conditions through Illinois 511 and should continue monitoring local forecasts for additional updates as snowfall progresses.

More updates are expected as conditions evolve throughout the morning.
