Springfield, Ill. – Severe thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, hail, and even a few tornadoes across Central Illinois Saturday, threatening travel and outdoor plans from noon through 8 p.m. The National Weather Service warns the most likely time for severe storms is between noon and 6 p.m. west of I-55, and from 2 to 8 p.m. east of I-55, with the entire region under a slight risk for scattered hazards.

According to the US National Weather Service in Lincoln, residents from Peoria and Springfield to Champaign and Bloomington should expect scattered wind gusts topping 60 mph, isolated quarter-size hail or larger, and possible tornadoes. While tornado chances are low (2% probability), any strong cell could quickly become dangerous. Localized flooding is also possible—especially in urban areas with poor drainage—if storms linger or repeat.

Travelers along I-55, as well as local communities including Decatur, Jacksonville, and Danville, should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions, downed limbs, and possible power outages. Officials urge everyone to stay weather-aware, postpone outdoor activities, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Move indoors quickly at the first sign of thunder, and avoid flooded roads.

Thunderstorm threats are expected to ease by late evening, but more weather advisories could follow if storms redevelop overnight. Stay tuned to local alerts for the latest updates.
