Springfield, Ill. – Sunshine will hold across Illinois through Tuesday, but a big shift arrives midweek as rain and cooler air push into the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a strong cold front will move through central Illinois on Wednesday, bringing a 70% chance of rain and breezy conditions. Highs will reach the upper 70s to low 80s before temperatures tumble into the 60s by Thursday.
The most significant rain will likely fall from Springfield to Bloomington, with lighter showers possible as far east as Champaign. Roads could be slick during the Wednesday evening commute, and residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time. Winds may also gust over 20 mph, adding to driving hazards.
After the front passes, dry and unseasonably cool weather will settle in. Highs Thursday and Friday will stay in the 60s, with overnight lows dipping into the upper 40s. Farmers and gardeners may welcome the break from the recent heat, but cooler nights could slow late-season crop growth.
Sunshine returns for the weekend with highs in the 70s. Another system may approach by early next week, but for now, conditions look quiet through Sunday.
