Springfield, IL – Central Illinois residents should prepare for an active midweek weather pattern as a strong system brings showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday, followed by a drop in temperatures and a chance of snow overnight into Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Central Illinois, an 80% chance of rain and storms is expected on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching between 68-71°F. By Wednesday night, temperatures will drop sharply into the 30s, increasing the potential for precipitation to change into snow early Thursday morning.

The NWS states that snowfall accumulation will remain low, with a 20-40% chance of minor accumulations of up to 1 inch north of I-74. Areas further south will primarily see rain and a significant temperature decline as highs on Thursday struggle to reach 50°F, a stark contrast from earlier in the week when temperatures were expected to climb into the 70s.

Residents are advised to prepare for rapidly changing conditions and stay updated on forecasts. Commuters should anticipate slick roads and reduced visibility, especially if snow develops in the northern regions. Travelers should check road conditions before heading out, particularly Thursday morning.
