Central Illinois – Light snow is spreading from west to east across central Illinois, with strong winds expected to reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, light snow moved into the region Sunday evening and is expected to continue eastward overnight. Forecasters warned that northwest wind gusts exceeding 45 miles per hour may cause blowing snow, leading to periods of reduced visibility.

While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, officials cautioned that a few slick spots could develop on roadways, particularly during the evening and overnight hours as temperatures fall. Reduced visibility combined with strong winds could make travel difficult, especially on open roadways.

The National Weather Service also warned that wind chills will plunge below zero by Monday morning, increasing the risk of cold-related exposure for anyone outdoors. Drivers are encouraged to dress for winter conditions and allow extra travel time if travel is necessary.

The advisory affects much of central Illinois, including areas along and east of the Illinois River, as the snow band continues to move east.

Officials recommend using caution while driving, watching for icy patches, and remaining aware of rapidly changing visibility conditions. Those traveling overnight or during the early Monday commute are urged to stay informed through local weather and road condition updates.

The update is especially relevant for commuters, overnight workers, and early-morning travelers as winter conditions return to the region.
