Lincoln, Illinois – Extreme heat and humidity will grip central Illinois through early next week, with heat index values soaring as high as 115°F and a persistent chance of thunderstorms through Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, daytime highs will range from 88°F to 98°F through Monday, with the hottest conditions expected today and Sunday. The heat index will regularly exceed 100°F—particularly south of I-72—while areas north of the interstate may briefly dip below triple digits Friday. A modest cooldown Friday and Saturday will offer little relief, with temps still peaking in the 90s.

Thunderstorms remain possible each afternoon and evening, with storm chances highest Friday and Saturday (30-60%). Drivers should be alert for sudden downpours and gusty winds, especially in rural areas north of Springfield and Decatur. Storms may also reduce visibility on I-55 and U.S. Route 36.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Use air conditioning when possible and never leave pets or children in vehicles.

Heat advisories may be extended if current patterns persist. Stay tuned for updates from NWS Lincoln and local emergency agencies.
