Peoria, IL – Central Illinois is gearing up for extreme heat through next week, with temperatures peaking on Tuesday. Peoria and Galesburg could see a heat index of up to 111°, making it one of the hottest days of the year.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln, Illinois, reports that heat and humidity will continue to build, with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 90s on Monday and Tuesday. The heat index, which accounts for temperature and humidity, is expected to soar to dangerous levels, particularly in areas like Peoria, Galesburg, and Effingham.

According to NWS, there is also a 20-30% chance of thunderstorms near and west of the Illinois River tonight and early Sunday. Despite isolated storms, the oppressive heat will persist, bringing slight chances of thunderstorms again by mid-week.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and check on vulnerable neighbors. The heat wave is expected to ease slightly by Wednesday, with temperatures dropping to the low to mid-90s.
