Springfield, Ill. – Oppressive heat is bearing down on Illinois this weekend, with heat indices soaring between 100 and 110 degrees each afternoon and evening. Springfield and much of central Illinois could see peak heat near 106, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, isolated thunderstorms are possible each afternoon and evening, carrying a 10–20% chance of heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning. While coverage will be limited, storms that do develop could bring sudden downpours and brief but strong wind gusts.

The sweltering heat will continue through Monday, with highs holding in the upper 90s and humidity driving heat indices above 105. Commuters and outdoor workers in Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington, and surrounding areas should limit activity during the hottest parts of the day and stay hydrated. Emergency officials urge residents to check on elderly neighbors and never leave children or pets in vehicles.

A weak front moves through Tuesday, bringing scattered showers and a better chance for relief as highs drop into the mid-80s by Wednesday. Conditions are expected to trend cooler and less humid into midweek, but heat advisories may remain in effect through early next week.
