Champaign, Illinois – Scattered storms and rising heat could disrupt travel and outdoor plans in east-central Illinois starting Thursday afternoon, as the region enters a stretch of hot, unsettled weather heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected after 1 p.m. Thursday, with highs soaring near 88°F. Winds will stay light but variable, so localized downpours could catch drivers off guard — especially along Interstates 72 and 74. Friday brings more of the same, with a 91°F high and another 30% chance of storms in the afternoon.
By Friday night, the storm risk rises to 40%, and by Saturday, rain chances climb to 60% with possible thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Temperatures will remain summerlike, with highs hovering in the upper 80s to low 90s throughout the forecast period.
Expect partly cloudy nights with lows in the upper 60s, giving little relief from daytime humidity. Sunday and Monday both carry a 30% chance of showers, mainly after 1 p.m., but no widespread flooding or severe weather is expected at this time.
Safety tip: Have weather alerts enabled on your phone and avoid low-lying roads during heavy downpours. If thunder roars, head indoors.
The next update from the NWS could include thunderstorm watches, especially ahead of Saturday’s potential system. Stay weather-aware and plan accordingly through Monday, July 15.
