Springfield, IL – Residents across central Illinois can expect a rollercoaster of temperatures this weekend, followed by a significant and sustained warmup heading into Christmas week, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

Forecasters say temperatures will fluctuate through Saturday and Sunday, with highs ranging from the upper 20s to low 50s, depending on the day and location. Friday remains on the colder side, with highs mainly in the upper 20s to low 30s, before milder air briefly moves in Saturday, pushing highs into the mid-40s to low 50s.

Sunday will turn cooler again, with highs generally in the low to mid-40s, but that cooldown will be short-lived.

According to the National Weather Service, a more sustained warming trend begins Monday, with temperatures steadily climbing each day through midweek. Highs are expected to reach the 40s Monday, rise into the 50s by Tuesday, and continue warming into Wednesday.

By Christmas Day, forecasters say highs could reach the low to mid-60s across much of central Illinois — well above normal for late December. Typical Christmas Day highs in the region usually sit in the mid-30s, making this year’s forecast notably mild.

The warm, dry pattern is expected to hold through much of next week, which could benefit holiday travel and outdoor plans. However, officials note the unusual warmth may limit any chances for snow heading into Christmas.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated as forecasts are refined, especially if planning travel or outdoor holiday events.
