Clinton, IL – Central Illinois remains under a flash flood warning this evening as torrential rain has already inundated several counties, prompting public safety alerts and urging caution for area drivers.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, radar data as of 6:50 p.m. Wednesday indicated that between 1 and 3 inches of rain had fallen across parts of De Witt, southeastern McLean, northwestern Macon, northern Piatt, and northwestern Champaign counties. The flash flood warning remains in effect until 8 p.m.

The warning stems from thunderstorms that caused rapid runoff, resulting in flooding of small creeks, streams, urban roadways, and low-lying areas. Interstate 74 between mile markers 153 and 165 is also affected, with reports of high water in some spots.

Flood-prone areas under warning include Clinton, Farmer City, Fisher, Maroa, and Warrensburg, along with Weldon Springs State Park and the Clinton Power Station area.

The National Weather Service emphasized that additional rainfall is expected to be light, but saturated ground conditions may prolong flooding concerns. Residents are advised to avoid water-covered roads, noting that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.

“Turn around, don’t drown” remains the critical reminder as emergency management teams monitor the situation. The public is encouraged to report any instances of flooding to local authorities if it can be done safely.

Motorists and residents in the affected areas should remain alert through the evening hours as conditions may change rapidly.
