Champaign, IL – Residents should remain cautious today as gusty winds and dry conditions continue to elevate the fire risk across central Illinois. A high near 69°F is expected, with north-northwest winds blowing at 7 to 9 mph, creating dangerous fire conditions.
On Sunday, similar wind conditions led to a large field fire near Herscher in Kankakee County, which has since burned out of control. The field fire near Herscher has already consumed a large area of farmland, and multiple fire departments have been called in to control the blaze.
According to the National Weather Service, Champaign’s relative humidity is expected to hover around 20%, and northwest winds could gust up to 30 mph. This combination significantly increases the chance of fire spread, leading officials to advise residents against outdoor burning. Conditions are expected to improve later this week, but the fire risk remains elevated today.
Tonight, skies will be clear with a low of 44°F and lighter winds, which may provide some relief. However, the dry and breezy conditions will return Tuesday, with a high near 73°F and light northwest winds becoming calm by the evening.
