Springfield, IL – An elevated fire danger is in effect across central Illinois this afternoon as dry and windy conditions raise the risk of field fires, according to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois.

The agency reports that areas near and north of Interstate 72, including Danville, face the greatest threat. South winds are expected to gust between 20 and 30 mph, with humidity levels dropping to around 30% or less.

According to the NWS, several field fires have already occurred in recent days, and today’s conditions remain favorable for more. The combination of strong winds and low humidity could cause any stray spark to spread quickly, particularly during ongoing harvest activities.

Officials urge farmers and residents to avoid open burning and to take extra precautions when operating farm machinery or discarding cigarettes and matches.

The heightened fire risk is expected to persist through the afternoon before easing as winds decrease later tonight.
