Springfield, IL – Central Illinois is facing another round of heavy rain and thunderstorms this weekend, with conditions expected to worsen through Sunday evening. Showers and storms are forecast to intensify, particularly southeast of the Illinois River. Areas along the I-72 corridor could experience significant rainfall, compounding existing flooding concerns.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy rain has already caused flooding in parts of east-central and southeast Illinois, with rivers and streams continuing to rise. An additional 0.5 to 1 inch of rain is predicted through Sunday, further worsening waterlogged conditions. The service warns that travel could be dangerous, especially in flooded areas, and advises against driving into water-covered roads.

Weather conditions will improve south of I-74 on Monday, with drier weather expected. However, northern and central regions may see lingering rain through Sunday night. Motorists are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone areas.

Authorities emphasize preparedness and urge residents in flood-affected regions to take precautions, such as moving vehicles to higher ground and securing loose outdoor items. Flood watches remain in effect until the storm passes.
