Champaign, IL – Dry air and gusty winds will create an increased fire risk across Central Illinois today, with conditions expected to remain warm and breezy throughout the week. Fire officials urge residents to avoid open burning and use caution with outdoor equipment.
According to the National Weather Service, relative humidity could drop as low as 20% this afternoon, combining with southwest winds gusting up to 25 mph. These conditions create an elevated fire danger, especially in areas with dry vegetation. Counties affected include Champaign, Vermilion, McLean, and Sangamon, among others.
Temperatures will continue rising as the week progresses, bringing a taste of spring to the region. Tuesday’s high is expected to reach 65°F, followed by 70°F on Wednesday and a warm 75°F by Thursday. Winds will shift from the southwest to the northeast by midweek, slightly reducing fire concerns but maintaining breezy conditions.
By Friday, showers and a possible thunderstorm may bring relief, cooling temperatures into the mid-60s. The weekend outlook includes partly cloudy skies, with highs remaining in the 60s and lows in the 30s.
Residents are advised to take precautions against fire hazards today and remain weather-aware for potential rain later in the week.
