Lincoln, IL – Dense fog is expected to redevelop across much of central Illinois this evening, potentially impacting Christmas Eve travel and visibility.

According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, areas of dense fog south of Interstate 72 will gradually diminish early this morning. However, another round of fog is forecast to develop later today and become more widespread this evening and overnight.

Forecasters say the most extensive dense fog is expected tonight, with visibility reductions likely across a large portion of the region. Periods of drizzle are also possible this afternoon and tonight, especially near and north of Interstate 74, which could further reduce visibility and create damp road conditions.

Despite the fog, temperatures will remain unseasonably mild. Highs today and Christmas Day are expected to reach the 50s across much of central Illinois. Cooler conditions are anticipated north of I-74, where highs may stay in the 40s, while areas south of I-70 could see temperatures climb into the 60s.

The foggy pattern is expected to persist into Christmas morning, with gradual improvement later in the day. No significant precipitation or winter weather impacts are anticipated during this period.

The National Weather Service advises drivers to use caution, slow down, and allow extra travel time, particularly during evening and overnight hours when fog becomes densest.

This forecast is especially relevant for holiday travelers, overnight workers, and early Christmas morning commuters navigating rural highways and low-lying areas.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates as fog coverage and density may vary by location.
