Springfield, IL – Illinois residents should prepare for a dynamic weather event on Wednesday, with strong winds, thunderstorms, and a transition to snow impacting travel and safety.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Central Illinois, southwesterly winds will strengthen throughout the day Wednesday, with gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph. These conditions will make travel difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles, and unsecured outdoor objects may be displaced.
Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Wednesday afternoon across much of Illinois, with the highest risk in northern, central, and southeast parts of the state. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 of 5 risk for severe weather, indicating the potential for damaging winds and hail. The storms are expected to move eastward by the evening.
By Wednesday night, rain will transition to snow, particularly north of I-72, with Galesburg having nearly a 50% chance of more than an inch of accumulation. While much of the snowfall will melt on roadways, slick spots and reduced visibility are possible.
Residents are urged to secure lightweight outdoor items, drive cautiously in high winds, and remain alert for potential severe weather warnings. Travelers should prepare for hazardous road conditions overnight into Thursday.
