Central Illinois – A significant heatwave is expected to impact Central Illinois this weekend, with temperatures surging above normal and heat indices nearing 100 degrees from Sunday through Tuesday. The National Weather Service warns residents of the intense heat, which could pose health risks, especially to vulnerable populations.

Starting today, temperatures will begin a gradual climb, with highs reaching the upper 80s by Friday. By Sunday, the heat will peak, with daily highs in the mid-90s. The heat index, which factors in humidity, will push “feels like” temperatures close to 100 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, there is also a 20-40% chance of thunderstorms Saturday night into Sunday. The storms could bring brief relief, but they may also cause sudden wind gusts and heavy rain.
