Champaign, IL – Snow showers sweeping across central Illinois today could make roads, including I-72, treacherous by the afternoon. A 30–50% chance of snow is forecast, with brief but heavy bursts reducing visibility to less than half a mile and leaving a thin layer of accumulation. Wind gusts could reach up to 35 mph, creating additional hazards for drivers.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop into the 20s by afternoon, causing melted snow to quickly freeze and creating slick surfaces. Motorists should exercise caution, especially during snow bursts that may make it difficult to see or stop safely. Residents are advised to monitor road conditions and allow extra travel time as driving conditions could change rapidly.
Wednesday evening will bring clear skies but bitterly cold temperatures, with lows near 10 degrees and wind chills as low as -3. Northwest winds will calm to 5–10 mph overnight.
Looking ahead, Thursday will remain mostly cloudy with a high near 21 degrees, while Friday evening brings an 80% chance of rain that could turn icy as temperatures hover near freezing. A stronger system is expected Saturday, with rain and highs near 46 degrees but increasing the risk of localized flooding.
With shifting conditions throughout the week, drivers and residents should stay updated on local forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy precipitation.
